< Mega Drive/Genesis Sound Engine List
Sample Music Playback System (SMPS) was Sega of Japan's internal sound driver, also known as "Sound-Source." There are two different versions, one for use with the Motorola 68000 (the Mega Drive/Genesis' main CPU) and one for the Zilog Z80 (the Mega Drive/Genesis' secondary CPU). There are several variations thereof that are better documented on this list than on ours.
An early version of SMPS can be found in Sega arcade games such as Space Harrier. There were also versions for the Mega CD/Sega CD, 32X, Master System, and Pico.
