CSK Research Institute Corp. (株式会社CSK総合研究所), or CRI for short, was established in October 1983 [1] as the research institute of CSK, which at the time owned Sega. Initially focused on Artificial Intelligence, which saw them collaborate on projects such as the Sega AI Computer [2], they pivoted into researching multimedia and began producing a variety of software for PCs, consoles and handhelds. During this time, they also began work on backend technologies for Sega consoles such as the Saturn and Dreamcast.
CSK sold the company to Sega head Isao Okawa on October 1st, 1999 [3], and eventually the software arm of CRI was merged into Sega's AM2 division. Their tools development business was spun off into its own company, CRI Middleware, which continues to this day.
