Wayne J. Smithson began programming as a teenager out of his bedroom in Leeds, England. He wrote several titles for the Dragon 32 computer under the name '''Smithson Computing'''. (''Retro Gamer'' 186)

Smithson later struck up a relationship with Psygnosis. The influx of work and money allowed him to expand the company from just one person; the name was changed to '''WJS Design'''. (''Retro Gamer'' 186)

On the advice of his accountant, Smithson switched WJS Design from a sole trader business to a limited company. In doing so, he also renamed the company '''Sunrise Games'''. (''Retro Gamer'' 186) Sunrise Games Ltd was incorporated on 12 January 1995.

Sunrise was renamed '''RGB Tree Ltd''' on 11 January 2000. Rage acquired the company less than a month later (8 February 2000).
