'''Sanritsu Denki Co., Ltd.''' (サンリツ電気株式会社) was a Japanese industrial company established in December 1973. It originally manufactured communications equipment and vending machines before expanding into arcade machines. In 1979, the company began developing its own hardware and software. '''SIMS Co., Ltd.''' (シムス株式会社) was started on June 12, 1991 [http://www.sims.co.jp/company.html#sims], with investment from [[Sanritsu]] and Sega. It was originally formed to help bolster the Master System's library in Europe, where that console had proven successful, and to produce original software for the Mega Drive and Mega CD. [http://chibarei.blog.jp/gsl/words/sims/sims.html]

In addition to manufacturing, developing, and publishing its own video games, Sanritsu also developed a number of arcade and home games for Sega. The end result of this relationship was '''SIMS Co., Ltd.''' (シムス株式会社). Basically the spinoff of Sanritsu's game division, it has been said SIMS was originally a joint venture of Sanritsu and Sega [http://review-site.net/dt/index.php/し#.E3.82.B7.E3.83.A0.E3.82.B9.EF.BC.88SIMS.EF.BC.89], but this may not be entirely accurate. After having been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sega, SIMS became independent on June 25, 2004, when president Noboru Machida took over all stock from the veteran game maker. [http://www.sims.co.jp/company.html]
+
As a Sega subsidiary, the company went on to support the Saturn and Dreamcast and non-Sega platforms such as the PlayStation and the WonderSwan. Starting with the Dreamcast version of ''Sega Bass Fishing'', the Shibuya, Tokyo-based firm found a niche as a maker of fishing games.

SIMS supposedly stands for "Soft development Innovation Multi Success." [http://review-site.net/dt/index.php/し#.E3.82.B7.E3.83.A0.E3.82.B9.EF.BC.88SIMS.EF.BC.89] However, former Working Designs president Victor Ireland has said it is "an acronym for the last names of the company partners." Original president Mamoru Shigeta (重田守) [http://chibarei.blog.jp/gsl/words/sims/sims.html], who at the same time also served as director of consumer software at Sega [https://www.wired.com/1994/11/rocket-science/], was previously president of Sanritsu. [http://www.ampress.co.jp/backnumber/bn2009.06.01.htm] He was later replaced by current president Noboru Machida (町田登) [http://www.sims.co.jp/company.html], former development director at Sanritsu. [http://chibarei.blog.jp/gsl/words/sanritsu/sanritsudenki.html] On June 25, 2004, SIMS underwent a management buyout, i.e. Machida acquired the company from Sega. [http://web.archive.org/web/20040716060026/http://www.sims.co.jp:80/outline.html]

The original president of SIMS was Mamoru Shigeta (重田守), who had been president of Sanritsu since 1989. [http://www.ampress.co.jp/backnumber/bn2009.06.01.htm] He also owned part of the company [http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/Blog:8#SIMS:_What.27s_the_Real_Story.3F] and was director of consumer software at Sega during this timeframe. [http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/2.11/rocket.science.html?pg=3&topic=] The current president is Noboru Machida (町田登) [http://www.sims.co.jp/company.html], former development director at Sanritsu. Current SIMS logo.

SIMS Co., Ltd. (シムス株式会社) was started on June 12, 1991 [1], with investment from Sanritsu and Sega. It was originally formed to help bolster the Master System's library in Europe, where that console had proven successful, and to produce original software for the Mega Drive and Mega CD. [2]

As a Sega subsidiary, the company went on to support the Saturn and Dreamcast and non-Sega platforms such as the PlayStation and the WonderSwan. Starting with the Dreamcast version of Sega Bass Fishing, the Shibuya, Tokyo-based firm found a niche as a maker of fishing games.

Original president Mamoru Shigeta (重田守) [3], who at the same time also served as director of consumer software at Sega [4], was previously president of Sanritsu. [5] He was later replaced by current president Noboru Machida (町田登) [6], former development director at Sanritsu. [7] On June 25, 2004, SIMS underwent a management buyout, i.e. Machida acquired the company from Sega. [8]
