Founded in 1983, Compile developed a wealth of games for numerous publishers spanning many genres and formats. The company closed in 2002. For a while, Compile also ran an 18+ label called Momonoki House, with a disk magazine called Peach Up.

Several companies were started by former Compile staff. Aiky was established in 2002 by Compile president Masamitsu Niitani, but closed down in 2006; he started another company called Compile-O in 2016. DigiMix was established in 2000 by former staff and renamed Enter in 2004. MileStone was established in 2003 by Hiroshi Kimura, but shut down in 2013 amid legal trouble. Softfactory was started by Fubon Kitano in 1999. Sting was started by Takeshi Santo in 1989. Type-Moon was started by Takashi Takeuchi in 1999. Additionally, Compile Heart was originally a collaborative venture between Masamitsu Niitani and Idea Factory established in 2006, but Niitani terminated his contract after only six months leaving Idea Factory in full control of the company.

The rights to Compile's properties are today owned by Sega and D4 Enterprise.
